Description
Galaxy NGC 4753, coloured optical image. This elliptical galaxy is surrounded by an unusual network of dust filaments (purple, upper left and lower right of central yellow disc). They are visible because they absorb the light of the galaxy's stars. They may be the remnants of a smaller galaxy which was absorbed in a collision. NGC 4753 is in the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, about 50 million light-years away. Photographed by the 4-metre Mayall telescope of the Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, USA.
