Description
Arp 82 colliding galaxies. Combined visible, ultraviolet and infrared image of Arp 82, a set of two colliding galaxies in the constellation of Cancer. The main galaxy is the spiral NGC 2535 (centre), and it is colliding with its smaller companion galaxy NGC 2536 (lower left). Both are shown as pink-white in colour. Foreground stars are green. These galaxies are different from most galaxies, in that they have relatively young stars for the age of the galaxies, indicating that these stars have been formed in a second stage of star formation. Image data obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST, infrared, red) and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX, ultraviolet, blue), and the SARA telescope (visible, green).
