Galaxy pair Arp 116, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. Combined optical and infrared image of the two galaxies making up the Arp 116 galaxy pair. These are elliptical galaxy Messier 60 (M60, centre) and spiral galaxy NGC 4647 (upper right). These galaxies are in the early stages of interacting with each other. M60 and NGC 4647 are 54 million and 63 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Virgo. Image data obtained with the HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) instruments. Image published in 2012.
