Interacting galaxy NGC 5291, composite image. Combined optical and infrared image of the region surrounding interacting galaxy NGC 5291. The central elliptical galaxy underwent a collision 360 million years ago with another galaxy, with the remnants at right. NGC 5291 is around 200 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Centaurus. This image was obtained with the FORS2 (Focal Reducer and Low Dispersion Spectrograph) instrument on the ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. Image released in December 2015.
