Description
Milky Way galactic collision. Artwork of the Milky Way Galaxy colliding with the Andromeda Galaxy in 6 billion years time. Around this time, the Sun will become a red giant star. Our Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy are large members of the Local Group of gravitationally-bound galaxies. The Andromeda Galaxy is approaching at a speed of 120 kilometres-per-second. The stars of the galaxies are so widely spaced that stellar collisions are unlikely. However, stellar orbits will be altered as the two galaxies merge to form an elliptical galaxy. New stars will also be born as the massive galactic gas and dust clouds collide in the last major epoch of star formation in our galaxy.
